Iceland, often referred to as the land of fire and ice, stands as one of the most remarkable destinations we’ve had the pleasure of visiting. In celebration of my husband’s 30th birthday, I thought it would be a splendid idea to venture to this Nordic wonderland. While the journey to Iceland is relatively affordable, be prepared for a swift depletion of your funds upon arrival. Given its northern location and the logistical challenges posed by its remote access, the cost of living is steep. However, we embraced the spirit of adventure, making the most of our budget to create some truly epic experiences.
Reykjavik Rendezvous: A Private Passage to Iceland’s Heart
After a brief but scenic flight from the UK, we were whisked away on our pre-arranged private transfer to Reykjavik. Opting for this rather than the main tour bus, which, while economical, meanders through numerous stops, we found ourselves savouring the uninterrupted views and swift journey to our destination. Our arrival at the hotel—a recommendation from a well-travelled friend—was met with a heart-warming reception. The hotel, nestled in the heart of the capital, offered breathtaking views and a much-needed respite from the nippy March air. The warmth of our room was only matched by the hospitality that greeted us, setting the stage for an unforgettable Icelandic saga.
After a scenic stroll along Reykjavik’s bustling harbour, where the briny scent of the sea mingled with the crisp Arctic air, we found ourselves gazing up at the imposing Hallgrimskirkja. Its towering presence, a beacon in the cityscape, beckoned us with its unique architecture steeped in history. We also visited Perlan Observatory. Our adventure continued as we stumbled upon a familiar haven—Brewdog. My husband’s eyes lit up at the sight; it was the perfect spot for him to savour his birthday beers, accompanied by a hearty burger infused with local Icelandic flavours. Have you ever discovered a slice of home while traveling abroad?
Chasing Shadows and Spirits: A Twilight Quest for the Northern Lights
The following day we continued exploring our surrounding area and looking at the rich history of Reykjavik. As dusk broke, the excitement for our Northern Lights tour with Arctic Adventures was palpable. Wrapped in the warmth of our winter gear, we set out into the South of Iceland’s vast landscapes. The local spirit, Brennivin—once ominously known as Black Death Vodka—proved to be the perfect companion to the chill, its fiery embrace turning my breath into a dragon’s smoke when mixed with hot chocolate. Although the elusive auroras hid behind a veil of clouds and distant city lights, the night still unfolded in a tapestry of stars and silhouettes. The true highlight was Arctic Adventures’ promise to chase the lights again, offering a complimentary rebooking for the undeterred seeker. With spirits undampened, we eagerly upgraded to an offroad jeep tour, setting the stage for another thrilling escapade following our Golden Circle adventure.
Iceland’s Embrace: Tectonic Wonders and the Aurora’s Dance
On our next day in Iceland, we embarked on the quintessential Golden Circle tour with Arctic Adventures. As we nestled into the cosy confines of a small minibus, we set off to explore Iceland’s most iconic sites. The thrill of walking between two tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park was surreal, each step a literal passage through Earth’s history. The mighty Gullfoss Falls roared in the distance, its mist kissing our faces as we stood in awe. Our day culminated with a tranquil dip in the Secret Lagoon, its warm waters a stark contrast to the crisp air.
Our final day was spent in the ethereal embrace of the Blue Lagoon. With the world retreating into lockdown, we found ourselves among a mere handful of visitors in this usually bustling oasis. The stillness was profound, the geothermal waters a balm to the soul.
As night fell, we ventured out once more, hearts set on the elusive dance of the aurora borealis. Perched atop a mountain range, with a frozen lake beside us, we waited. And then, as if the heavens knew of our longing, the sky erupted in a symphony of colour. The aurora borealis unfurled above us, a living tapestry of green and violet. There we stood, braving the -14°C chill, utterly spellbound. It was a moment of pure magic, a fitting finale to our Icelandic saga.
